The other day we had a redtail hawk in the neighborhood. It got one of our prolific black squirrells on the side of the street, and was being relentlessly pursued by the neighborhood crows. We…Continue

"I have only seen a handful of them alive in the last few years. They get hit on the road frequently here. This is the closest I have been to one. The others were usually high up in a tree, where you couldn't see them well."

"You're so lucky! I don't know if I've ever seen a porcupine in the wild, and if I did it was when I was a kid."

Porcupine

Being unemployed has allowed me to be out more frequently than in previous years. Yesterday in Oil Creek State Park I walked within 15 feet of a porcupine before I saw him. He lumbered over to a sapling and climed about 6 feet up. With no camera I had to settle for closeups on my cell phone. The little fellow seemed completly unbothered throughout the whole thing. After a few fuzzy pics on my phone I continued on and let him go about his day.

Gerard Hiking Trail

I do a lot of hiking on the Gerard Trail in Oil Creek State Park. Located between Oil City PA and Titusille there are over 30 miles of trail and two adirondack shelter sites that make for a great three day/two night trip. Camping is open year round, but I haven't tried it in the winter (yet). Day hikes are easy to plan especially with the loops from cross country ski trails. I am regularly seeing ruffed grouse, and there are a lot of wild turkey. There is also a long bike trail along Oil Creek.…See More

Redtail Hawk

The other day we had a redtail hawk in the neighborhood. It got one of our prolific black squirrells on the side of the street, and was being relentlessly pursued by the neighborhood crows. We stopped about 10 feet from it but didn't have our camera. It seemed completely unaffected by our presence, and more concerned with keeping it's meal.

About Me:
Work and family have consumed my time afield. I used to work in equestrian/wilderness programs. Now I am teaching my little girls, so I have an excuse to get out. I am also supposed to become a deputy conservation officer next year.
Best Outdoor Experience:
My wife's first backpacking trip. Too long, too hot, got twisted around on the trail, but when we finally got through the first day it was a great trip. Now I'm trying to break in our little girls easier on the trail.
