My name is Jason. I have been a Hoosier all my life. I have been fascinated by snakes for as long as I could remember. Growing up I would catch all the garter snakes I could find in my parents yard, and keep them in a large pickle jars in my parents garage, and release them a few days later. I could remember having 14 snakes at one time in my parents garage.
My parents were not particularly fond of me having so many snakes in their garage, so they shipped me off to the Indianapolis Children Museum to become a volunteer. I can remember protesting to my parent until I learned that the natural science gallery contained more snakes than any other animal they had there on exhibit.
I volunteered there for several years only to make my passion for snakes worse. I was finally allowed to keep a snake in the house as long as the snake didn't eat any rodents. I guess this was my parents way of keeping the size of the snake down. After years of keeping garter snakes, and water snake I finally convinced my parents that I needed a ball python, then later it was a Burmese python. My mom was still not thrilled about them eating large rodents.
At the age of 13 I received a "dry bite" from a copperhead at my uncles house in southern Indiana while gathering firewood for a wiener roast , and was kept in the hospital for 2 days for observation. I can remember the pain of that bite to this day. As much as it hurt, and the amount of swelling, you would of though that I was envenomated. Surprisingly my parents didn't discourage my hobby, but encouraged me to learn more about different kinds of snakes, and to be able to identify the ones to be more cautious with.
Today at the ripe old age of "half way to 62" (I am 31 for those of you who didn't get the joke) I find my passion for these animals still burning strong, and would jump on any opportunity to go out ,and experience these animals in there natural environment.
