Sand flats around wooded islands on the Susquehanna River. From the York (west ) side of the river, set out from Long Level, and Shank's Mare Outfitters; an interpretive sign points the way across more than a mile of water to the Flats. Past the weekend power boat traffic is a hidden world, an Important Bird Area, a stopover for migrating snow geese in late winter, home to egrets, herons, gulls, terns, sandpipers and eagles in warmer months.
