NatureBreak

I hope that I am allowed to post a link to the following petition:

http://www.petitiononline.com/GRYLLS00/petition.html

This is a message to Discovery Channel, Animal Planet and National Geographic Channel and concerns TV shows such as "MAN VS. WILD" with BEAR GRYLLS.

In times where nature conservation is of great importance, tv shows that show killing of animals for pure entertainment, teach wrong messages, especially to younger people that watch these shows.

There are a couple of links to youtube in the petition text that show video samples of unnecessary killings.

Everybody who is against tv shows like this should consider to sign the petition and pass it on to friends.

Thanks for reading!

This is fantastic Sandra!  Did you start the petition?  Have you seen the video I made about this very subject?  I am going to forward the petition to Chris Palmer, author of Shooting in the Wild, which is a book about the ethics of wildlife filmmaking.

Dear Vanessa and Sandra,

I am so proud to add my name to this petition.

Bear Grylls' behavior is sickening, detestable, selfish, and cruel.

Best wishes,

Chris

Hello Vanessa!
Dear Mr. Palmer,

the petition was started by a herper from http://www.herpetofauna.gr and it was send to me by a fellow herper from Switzerland who supports this herp related website.

Vanessa, when I signed the petition I had to think about the video you made, I had already seen it a couple of month ago and was shocked back then already. Maybe you can do another one to support the petition? That would be really great.

Maybe we can also find a way to spread this petition on many boards over the internet. I think the internet can act as a very powerful tool to tranpsort messages.
Unfortunately, I already made the experience that "many" people find Bear Grylls' behaviour not that bad at all, because they would do the same, when they get lost. I don't really see why anybody getting lost in the Australian desert will be able to survive by biting a snakes head off. Especially with many of the Australian snakes belonging to the most venomous on earth. That makes the show also a potentially dangerous one, when younger folks convince themselves they are like Bear Grylls and really try that stuff.

I still hope we can reach out to many people that are rather interested in real nature conservation instead of senseless animal killing on tv.

Sandra
By the way, I also read "Shooting in the wild" and found it to be a really inspiring book. I hope that many nature filmmakers will follow the books' path.
Although we might have different opinions on Steve Irwin, whom I consider a personally hero of mine that inspired my way to become a nature conservationist.

;O) Sandra

Dear Sandra,

I understand!  Steve Irwin had many fine qualities. I particularly enjoyed his autobiography, where he clearly emphasizes his commitment to conservation.

Thanks for reading my book "Shooting in the Wild." It is now in its second printing.

Best, Chris

Sandra, thanks for telling me about herpetofauna.gr.  It is a cool site.  I am going to post my video there and offer it to them for use.

I know, I've also had a lot of feedback from people who say that Bear is teaching survival skills so his behavior is ok.  But you are right, the "skills" he is teaching are dangerous and irresponsible.  And the point is, he is not really lost in the wilderness and so does not need to kill any animals.  He can just as easily say, "here is an animal you could eat if you were stranded in the wilderness, but I am not going to harm it now."  There, the lesson would be learned just the same.

I'm in...signed and done.

Thank you, Sandra for bringing this to my attention. I had no idea.

I'll pass on the petition as well...

Well, it's not usually wildlife...usually, the TV producers will put a tame animal there for Bear to catch.
Nvm, I take what I said back. I don't wanna see that, anyway.
